About Me
I'm new to fishng from a kayak, but have fished freshwater/saltwater nearly all of my life. I got my first taste of kayak fishing in the Spring of 2011 joining a friend fishing for snook, & redfish in SW Florida. It changed me and left an indelible impression on me that I could not shake off.
I've always dreamed of owning my own fishing boat. When my wife's job took us from Southern California to New York in Dec. of 2001, I told her when we began to look for a new home... "I don't want to be too far inland, I want to be near the water because one day I'm going to own that fishing boat". We ended up on the North Shore of Long Island. less than 1/2 mile from Manhasset Bay in Port Washington.
With the economy the way it's been these last several years, plus the rediculous price of gas... my dream of that fishing boat seemed to get further and further away from me.
Then, when invited to go kayak fishing with my friend "Crazy" Alberto Knie the weekend before a convention I had to attend in Tampa, FL... I jumped at the chance. All I can say is "wow"... this was the way to fish... so stealthy, so quiet... so... you get the rest (or you wouldn't be on this forum). The low cost of maitenence, no gas, no mooring/docking fees, easy to launch, good upper body workout and excercise, and overall ease of traveling, launching, storing, etc. made it a "no brainer" for me (Yes, even though I opted for a motor on my yak, I still plan to paddle it a great deal).
Getting to know an entirely different fishery in the saltwater from where I grew up in San Diego and Southern California has been challenging to say the least... but exciting nonetheless. Sure, there aren't as many species to choose from and the climate is much colder... but SoCal doesn't have giant striped bass either! :-)
